Hello djm,
I have delete the "sites" folder for you. The reason why you was not able to delete it, is because you have in the subdirectorys ".htaccess" files that your ftp-client not show/know. Maybe you can activate "show hidden files" in the settings of you ftp client. Then you have no problems the next time to delete folders with files like ".htaccess".
